17-yr-old girl claims baby abandoned on the road

A 17-year-old girl has reported herself as the mother of the day-old baby abandoned along a road in Lafia.


A 17-year-old girl has stepped forward to claim the abandoned baby taken into the custody of the Nasarawa State Police Command. The Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP Idirisu Kennedy, made this disclosure on Thursday, November 3, saying that the mother of the day-old baby reported herself to the ‘A’ Division in Lafia.Kennedy said that the girl who hails from Doma, abandoned the baby along Shendam road in Lafia on Tuesday, November 1. According to the reports, investigations into the case revealed that the girl who hawks groundnut amongst other wares was impregnated by a man who is yet to be identified, at a construction site in Doma. Punch reports that the police spokesman said the young girl was chased from home after her parents discovered that she was pregnant. “She said the man responsible for her pregnancy is married, she could not face him to accept his responsibility and had to go to a woman at Mararaba Akunza, Lafia, who took her in because of her condition.” Kennedy went on to reveal that the girl had become restless on Monday, October 31, and asked her guardian that she wanted to return to Doma. After her caregiver gave her N2,000 for transport, the young reportedly ended up at the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital in Lafia on Monday where she delivered her baby and was discharged on Tuesday. Punch reports that the young girl said she abandoned the baby out of frustration.According to Kennedy, the teenager has been reunited with her baby that was reportedly taken into police custody and was to be handed over to officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development for proper care and upbringing. The PR officer also said that investigations are being carried out to find the father of the child and make him face his responsibilities. He also advised parents to monitor their children and to guard them against any form of abuse.
