If Ronaldo is AC/DC, Messi is reggaeton – Granero
Esteban Granero, a former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid, has given an unusual take on the world’s foremost player rivalry.
Granero described Ronaldo as being like Australian rock band AC/DC when asked for a musical take on the debate over the world’s top player.
The Spanish midfielder, who currently plays for Real Sociedad, suggested his old teammate would have to be “something heavy metal”, while he compared Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to reggaeton – a fusion genre that emerged in Latin America in the 1990s.
“Cristiano would be, for instance, AC/DC – something heavy metal,” he told AS TV.
“And Messi… let’s say that Messi is reggaeton. But the good kind!”
Ronaldo won the 2016 Ballon d’Or to move to within one of the record held by Messi, who has won the prize on on five different occasions.
Granero stated that he felt the debate is made more intense due to the historical rivalry between the two sides, but he believes Ronaldo was the right choice this time for the award on this occasion.
“It’s normal that, especially in Barcelona, they discuss the fact that Cristiano has won it and not Messi,” he said.
“It’s logical that there’s a debate because you need it to fill minutes on TV.
“But I think that the Ballon d’Or to Cristiano is the fairest choice.”
