Salary Payment: Nasarawa Labour Union Gives Al-Makura Two Weeks Ultimatum

The Nigeria Labour Congress in Nasarawa State has given the State government two weeks ultimatum to reverse its earlier decision of paying workers’ salaries in percentage or be ready to face its wrath.

In a statement by the labour union’s committee, the NLC said if the state government did not reverse its decision they would be forced to declare indefinite industrial strike in the state.
According to the statement, the additional three weeks earlier given to the tripartite committee to conclude its assignment had since elapsed without yielding any positive result, a situation that has left it with no other option than to issue a two-week ultimatum to the state government to press home its demand.
“We are surprised that the state government had continued to display its insincerity by insisting to pay salaries in percentage. Even July/August 2016 salaries that it earlier promised to pay only God knows when the salaries will be paid to workers in the state.
“We have given enough time for the state government to meet up with our demand, but from all indications the government seems not to be serious about our plights, as it has continued to give deaf ears to our demand and display its insincerity by insisting to pay workers salaries in percentage,” the statement added.
The union further pointed out that it its last bulletin, it had said that the long silence witnessed within the period was to enable it respect the rule of law to a logical conclusion.
“This we did by allowing the tripartite committee to conclude its assignment to the extent that a sub-committee was constituted to consolidate the work of the committee,” the statement further read.
The statement further stated that the two-week ultimatum, which had
since commenced from Monday, December 5 and will last till midnight of December 16, would be followed by an industrial action should the government fail to yield to their demand.
The statement, however, urged all accounting officers in various ministries and parastatals to ignore all printed vouchers currently in circulation for processing as doing that would mean that they have accepted the percentage payment.
