Suicide in Lagos lagoon: Anxiety as family rejects body fished out from lagoon

Anxiety has overwhelmed family members of Dr. Allwell Orji, the medical doctor who jumped into the Lagos lagoon on Sunday, following  non-recovery of his corpse three days after the suicide.
This is even as there was a mild drama yesterday at the office of Marine Police, Ikoyi, Lagos, as Orji’s  family rejected the body fished out in lagoon and presented to them as that of their son.
The police had, at about 11.40am, recovered a floating corpse and concluded that it was that of Orji.
However, when the family members arrived to identify the body, the story took a dramatic turn, as they rejected  it, saying it was not that of the medical doctor.
Daily Sun gathered that five members of the family, including Dr. Orji’s sibling, totally disowned the body.
A police source, who pleaded anonymity, said: “The check on the body to ascertain if it was Dr. Orji’s, was done in the presence of the General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr. Tiamiyu Adesina, the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni and other senior police officers, especially the officer in charge of Marine, Mr. Chinedu Iwuozor, but the family insisted that the body was not that of their son.
“The family argued that their son was taller than the body recovered. More so, Orji’s driver, Henry Ita, pointed out that the medical doctor wore a Chinos trousers and long sleeve shirt before taking the fatal dive into the lagoon.  But the body recovered was putting on a black jeans and short sleeve T-shirt.”
However, CP Owoseni has ordered that the search for  Orji  continues.
Meanwhile, Orji’s mother, Rosemary, is still hopeful that her son will be found alive.
She said that since Orji’s corpse has not be discovered, it is possible he is alive.
