– They are paid with public funds to protect Nigerians, but 2 police officers allegedly went against their task and engaged in abduction – They reportedly carried out their act in Delta state which has a soft law against acts of kidnapping and which has become the hub of abduction The Nigeria police in Delta state has arrested two of its men in the mobile police unit for abducting a businessman. It was however not known if the abduction was for a ransom or whether the police officers had any other motive.
The businessman, Daniel Umukoro, was kidnapped in Abraka, Ethiope East local council of the state, according to a confirmation by the the police spokesperson in the state, DSP Andrew Aniamaka. But the police spokesman gave the impression that the victim is believed to have had a business transaction with someone who invited the policemen for an illegal duty.
Aniamaka named the two police officers involved as Corporal Musa Edom and Oreva Idede and added that they were currently undergoing an orderly room trial. The Nigerian Tribune reports that the businessman was rescued from his abductors by men of the state anti-kidnapping committee. The report said the two police officers were among a four-man gang that carried out the abduction and that they ran out of luck when they were accosted at Okpara Waterside a few kilometres away from Abraka. The businessman was rescued while the two police officers were arrested as their accomplices escaped. Delta state has become renowned for high spates of abduction especially for ransom.
Recently, the wife of Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was abducted in the state. She was however rescued by security operatives. While some states like Edo has adopted death penalty for anyone found guilty of abduction, the former Delta state governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, reportedly refused to sign the law passed by the state House of Assembly as he argued that being a medical doctor, he swore an oath to save lives and not kill people.
