Speaking with journalists in Akure, Ondo state capital, the chairman of the state’s APC Ade Adetimehin called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop its intimidation tactics. The APC said the Ondo state’s PDPhas overtime threatened its members with a repeat of 1983 unrest. In 1983, a violent protest in the western Nigeria between the Hausa-Fulani indigenes and some members if the Nigerian National Democratic Party led to the first military coup on January 15, 1966. The term “Operation Wetie” was coined from the setting ablaze of politicians and their properties with petrol. In the early 1960, the violence was on a rapid rise in the political system of Nigeria which led to the introduction of Operation Wetie whereby political thugs were used to disrupt elections. However, Adetimehin said, no matter the level of intimidation and threat, the people of Ondo state are determined to follow a purposeful leadership. Adetimehin said Ondo people were known for discipline and high intellectual capacity. He said both the PDP and the Alliance for Democracy (AD) lacked what it takes to govern the state. He said: “Akeredolu has what it takes to turn the fortune of the state around.” “It can only take someone like Akeredolu who rose from a junior lawyer to the level of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) to give Ondo State the desired leadership,” Adetimehim said. Adetimehin also called on Ondo youths, market women, artisans, students and other stakeholders in the state to vote for Akeredolu in the coming election. He said all over the world, the people of the state were known for integrity and hard work, adding that Akeredolu symbolized all that integrity and hard work entailed.
