El-Rufai fires 4,776 district, village heads in Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led Kaduna State Government on Sunday said it has sacked 4,776 district, village heads and their workers.
It said that the decision was sequel to recommendations of the committee that reviewed the number of the traditional heads.
The government said that implementation of the report would lead to reorganisation in 77 districts and villages of the state.
Commissioner for Local Government, Jafaru Sani, told newsmen at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House, Kaduna, that ”the restructuring was done to reduce the financial burden on local government councils by the numerous district heads”.
He expressed optimism that the reduction would enable the councils channel monies, hitherto spent on the heads, on capital projects beneficial to the masses.
Sani explained that prior to the restructuring, the state government consulted the Kaduna State Council of Chiefs which endorsed the exercise.
He lamented that the creation of more districts from over 2000, increased the number of district heads along with increased personnel cost.
Sani lamented that the creation was followed by employment of 2,700 employees for district offices, a situation which saw local government councils expended huge funds on nearly 5,000 persons.
